HOW TO NOT SUCCEED IN THE ART WORLD
Nov 19, 2015HOW TO NOT SUCCEED IN THE ART WORLD
It’s pretty simple, actually
to not succeed in the art world.
If you don’t know then don’t worry.
I’ve got a few simple guidelines for you to follow.
You won’t have to learn anything new with these guidelines.
You won’t have to sacrifice going out with friends for studio time.
You won’t have to spend your last dime on that Cadmium Red.
THE GUIDELINES ON HOW TO NOT SUCCEED ARE SIMPLE
Don’t experiment.
Don’t think.
Don’t apply for shows.
Don’t make art buddies.
Don’t keep learning new techniques
Don’t really care.
DO THIS AND YOU WILL NOT SUCCEED IN THE ART WORLD
Paint just like the rockstar painter in the blue chip gallery.
Sculpt just like chick doing that crazy cool shit making 80,000 a pop.
Write poems just like Tenessee Williams.
Sleep in.
Drink too much.
Hang with people who won’t tell you your work isn’t working.
I promise you that you will not succeed in the art world if you follow those guidelines.
Want something different?
Want to succeed
At least make a dent?
Get a show?
Make a sale?
Create a body of work with your own style?
GUIDELINES TO SUCCEED
Work as much as possible.
Go to shows to see new work
Be part of critiques.
Have your work ripped to shreds to make it better.
Apply to group shows, residencies, New American Paintings
Invite people over for studio visits.
Be active and engaged in the art world.
You will get a show
You will get recognition
You will sell your work
You will be as successful as you believe you can be
If you do the work.
I believe in you.
